ITF-14 for Shipping Cartons

ITF-14 is the carton-level barcode distributors scan when they receive cases—not the EAN or UPC on the selling unit inside. If you ship mixed pallets to retailers or 3PLs, this symbol is often mandatory. Generate GTIN-14 artwork with the ITF-14 generator and validate reads in the barcode scanner.

Why it matters

A case barcode encodes GTIN-14, which identifies the trade item at the pack level (inner pack, case, or pallet) rather than a single consumer SKU. ITF-14 uses Interleaved 2 of 5 bars, which tolerate corrugated board and rough handling better than many retail symbologies. How to apply it

Start from a valid GTIN-14 in your item master, assign the correct packaging level indicator, and print at a magnification your DC can read from a forklift distance. Carton labels also need bearer bars and quiet zones that survive flexo and direct thermal transfer.

• Register GTIN-14 values in GS1—do not reuse a consumer GTIN with a different packaging level digit.
• Print ITF-14 on the largest flat panel of the case, away from seams, tape, and stretch-wrap overlap.
• Include bearer bars top and bottom when your print spec or trading partner requires them for ITF symbols.
• Proof at receiving distance with the same imager guns your 3PL uses, not only at arm's length.

Common mistakes

Common failures include printing the retail EAN on the case, wrong packaging level digits, bars that are too short for the scan angle, and labels placed across corrugate seams.
